Squeaking sounds when starting my RR 300 2016:(

Postby Mikhail » Sun Apr 03, 2016 10:27 am

Guys, after a few days pause from riding, when I try to start the engine, the first few turns (about 1-2 secs) i hear high-pitch squeaking sound coming from the engine - as if dry metal surface of a piston drags over dry surface of the cylinder. Very quickly the sound disappears. When on the trail, this sound does not appear when starting the motor...only during the first start at the beginning of the riding day (dunno whether its connected to cold engine or tiny lag of oil supply by the oil injector).

Should I be worried? Is this a sign of excess wear due to oil injection starting to supply oil with a small lag compared to premix (which goes in with fuel immediatelly)?

Many thanks for the advice.

Take some injector oil and mix it with gas in a spray bottle pull the plug and fog the cylinder kick over a few tines to lube the walls and put the plug back in and hit the starter button see if the noise goes away.

Pull the pipe and look in the exhaust port piston down: at the cylinder walls for damage Piston up for skirt damage such as galling

do a compression check

Pull the head off and look for damages

Any or all of the above should tell you if its the injector or just one of those weird 2stroke sound that means nothing

Thanks. Thats actually too much messing around without knowing there is a problem:(. Forgot to add the bike is new - just 8 hrs on it...is it likely the symptoms show issue in lubrication?

I wouldn't worry too much about lubrication problems, at least in the engine. You rode the bike afterwards. If it was going to tie up it would have.
I'd look at the starter drive. If it does it again after its cold try to get an ear down there and figure out where it's coming from.

Sounds to me like the starter is dragging a little. Manually kick start the bike and see if you still hear the noise. If not, I bet the starter is dragging a little during disengagement.

Look at your IO line going into the carb boot just in front of the carb to make sure oil is pumping.

I agree with TN- Beta,

I have only 4 hours on my new 300. I attempted to start it last weekend after not starting it for a month. We were experiencing unusually cold temperatures and it was 35 F when I started it. The starter sounded normal for 2 seconds and then it either bound up or didn't engage properly. It was a cross between a squeal and a whirring sound. It didn't make this sound when I kicked it over so I'm certain the noise came from the starter. I kicked it over a few times and then the electric starter worked fine.

I have a 14 300rr and have heard the same sounds a few times when it was cold outside. I read some where that you shouldn't start the bike cold on the electric start.I use my kick start on the to start it the first time if its cold out and haven't heard it since.

My 2016 300RR has the same noise. I first heard it with less than 2hrs on the motor. It only happens during cranking. Initially I was concerned there might be some kind of compression or vacuum leak, but I've decided that's not likely the case and I'm just going to monitor it and not lose any sleep over it. I'm having a blast on that bike, so easy to ride once it's set up properly. I'm very, very happy with it.
