Strange noise

Postby fefy » Tue Apr 24, 2018 9:49 am

So something went wrong.
My last ride showed strange noise coming from the bottom of the engine. The noise is also in neutral gear and disappears when I press the clutch. The oil is 10 hours. What do you think is the problem.

Get the manual out to look. Take off the cover and see what’s up or take to your mechanic/ dealer. I like to have a gasket on hand . Try giving more detail on what this sound is.

You check your chain tension? We just had a nice spike in temp and had to adjust mine since it was rattling

Not sure what sort of strange noise you are hearing but mine had a "whir" type noise in the bottom end and the tone decreased when I pulled in the clutch like you are describing. It was worn crank bearings in my case. I had to split the case and install new bearings but it's all good now and sounds like new. I hope it's less serious for you, check for loose bolts on engine mounts, case guard etc as they can cause strange noises through vibration.

Cause of my bearing failure appeared to be moisture entering the crank case, rust was visible on the bearings and they were pitted.

Thanks to everyone. I'll look at everything and will open the clutch when I have free time.

Crank bearings start as a whirring and and will eventually turn into a tapping sound, I raced mine quite a bit with the whirring sound before I figured out what was going on.

IMHO that´s not a bearing sound (higher pitched, tone increasing with revs) but a clutch sound, not much to worry about until your clutch starts to slip off.
