Why the starter works so good

Pulled my ignition cover for a look see. Everything is perfect, oil in the well, and not a shard of metal to be found. Took a few pics :

Of particular note is the steel bushing in the cover for the Bendix. A far cry from the GG that runs dry in an aluminum bore that wears.

Man that is awesome.

On the earlier KTM 300's they would do the "wet mod" to help with the sketchy design. You would seal off the ignition cover and put a few ounces of oil in there. Looks like Beta did it right from the beginning.

The 2013's didn't seem to need it when they went to the stronger motor, however you still had that hokey intermediate gear between the motor spline and the bendix. Looks like the Beta motor spline directly engages the bendix. Sweet.

On the KTM even with the stronger motor, there was still the issue of the spline bearing getting moisture in it and seizing up. I had to deal with that right before I sold the KTM.

Such a superior design here. When people ask me why I went with Beta (you would think I was trying to leave a cult, maybe I did) one of the top reasons was a motor designed for e-start not the other way around .

Just going through some stuff before racing starts and figured this would be interesting to those that have not seen it or the shop manual. There is a small amount of oil in the well where the starter engages the bendix gear. Everything had a nice coating. The biggest difference from the others is the precision and depth of the engagement, in the same plane. The cover is located with dowels like the clutch cover. BTW, if you have KTM Viton pipe orings they are the same.

Think the manual says to put 7cc of oil in there. I just filled the little space where the starter gear meets the bindex gear. Was about 10cc +/-. dont rip that thin paper gasket.

A couple cc spilled from mine so I just added approx the same back. I used a new gasket but also salvaged the original if needed. Used some ThreeBond as gasket dressing as this cover will not normally come off like that on a dry 2stroke ignition. Very narrow sealing surfaces on the cases.

Oh so it is separate from the tranny oil. I thought they just opened up a port to the tranny.

I couldn't find anything in the manual that talks about the oil in the ignition cover

I thought so too before I got the service manual. You simply add appox 7cc to the well below the Bendix. Page #81.
