Problem starting bike in gear

Postby vntgmxr88 » Sat Feb 22, 2014 12:32 pm

I was wondering if anyone else has come across this issue. I have a 2014 250 RR, and when starting it, hot or cold, it wants to move forward with the bike in gear and the clutch in. This is true with both the electric and kick starters. The clutch is properly adjusted at the handlebar. Thanks in advance.

A couple questions that may help get to the solution - 1) what kind of trans oil are you running 2) ambient temperature that this occurs at 3) what method did you use to assess correct adjustment 4) are you running the stock clutch lever 5) if you start it on a stand in neutral and pull the clutch in, does the rear wheel spin when you click it in gear?

Thanks for the reply, I appreciate the help.

1. Running Maxima 80 transmission oil. They say that is their equivalent of 10-40.
2. Attempting to start the motor both hot and cold, air temp was about 70 degrees.
3. Clutch lever adjustment puts it at it's furthest point possible away from the handlebar, I was thinking this would give the best leverage for
disengagement.
4. I am running the stock clutch lever. The perch may be inset about 1/4" to 1/2" over the stock position due to dealer installed hand guards.
5. The rear wheel does spin when the bike is put in gear with the wheel elevated and motor running.

I did call the dealer today, and they duplicated the same result on two new Betas on the showroom floor. They are going to call American Beta on Monday.

Try a lighter oil, like Rotella 5w-40w or Amsoil Ow-40w. Mine would drag with heavier oil, easy in gear starts now. A little break in time helps too.

Thank you. The bike only has a little over 100 miles on it.

My 2014 starts fine in gear when warm. Never tried it cold. Maybe clutch line needs to be bled?

Thanks, I was wondering about that too. It will be interesting to hear American Beta's take on this. Will post when I find out.

As a follow up, American Beta recommended burnishing the clutch plates. If that doesn't do it, I'll try a different oil. Other than this small issue, the bike is fantastic!
