Thermostat?

Postby brantsdad » Tue Feb 25, 2014 5:06 pm

Was reading where GMP had removed his... Has anyone else removed theirs? Thinking about it and it seems like somthing else to go wrong... But I'm not reading about issues with them here... so maybe they are trouble free ?

Thoughts... ???

Also to change coolant it looks like you remove a bolt on the water pump housing ?

I have only heard of one issue with the stock thermostat and it was a weak clamp. You can get the silicone hose kit that will eliminate the thermostat if you'd like.

Yes, remove the bolt with the copper washer on the pump cover to drain the coolant.

I'm making up a replacement "manifold" for the thermostat housing, but for now left it in for a cold weather race this weekend. Check to make sure its not vibrating/rubbing on the frame and add some rubber or from tape if needed. It's a tight fit. It's been fine, but just one more possible failure point and not needed in moderate weather.

found it tonight took the tank off and your not kidding about a tight fit... decided to make it easy on my self to put in another plug... Iridiam BR8ECMIX... that should last a while... will see if it starts to run hot.. if so I will take it out and start running the Evans stuff....

You will not have any issues even with the stock BR7 plug, which is a range hotter. Where I trail ride there are some locals who also ride trials so they make some interesting trails. This bike is as tolerant as the GasGas for crawling around at low speeds in tight woods, even with the added rad grills. The rads are large and apparantly the cooling jackets are done proper. Not knowing what the stock fill was I flushed and refilled with Engine Ice for top off compatibility. I have Evans as well but no need to use it in the Beta. This is at 1000' in summer temps FWIW.

The thermostats do restrict quite a bit of flow to one radiator, but the Beta rads have one more core than the orange-white-blue bikes and dissipate heat much better, I wish they would leave them as an option along with the euro wiring bird nest behind the headlight.
