'14 Starter motor doesn't work

Postby Craigfoot » Sun Mar 09, 2014 1:16 pm

Just purchased this week a'14 300 RR - bike started fine at the dealer.

Today, I've relocated horn and regreased steering bearing so had to unplug headlight. Re connected wires up behind light as starter wire had become disconnected. Also took of the indicator switch.

When press electric start totally flat ( battery is charged ) no noise nothing just zero response. I kicked over bike and horn /lights/ kill switch fine. When I tried to restart with elec button I can hear a single thud noise and then it's totally dead.

I swapped around fuses alas no joy.

Any ideas folks as I've need even taken bike out for a ride yet.

Thanks

When you say the bike started fine at the dealer was that w the estart?

I'd look for a pinched wire or bad ground to start.

Yep fired up first press of e stater .

I've relocate horn onto engine bracket under the tank . When I disconnected horn I think I may have seen some sparks.

The manual isn't that clear on changing the fuses - it says there is a spare 10 amp - I can see two 10 amp ones set within a small back plastic box , so I switched them around.

It's like no power is being conducted when e button is pressed.

It's a 400 mike round trip to bike shop so want to avoid that alas electrics isn't my strong point one bit.

Thanks for your reply .

Just looking at the wiring schematic in the manual it appears there is only one fuse, and that is at the starter/relay. I would assume that is the fuse you swapped out. The clunk statement has me stumped, could you have plugged the starter button wire into the wrong receptacle? What indicator switch did you remove? I'm obviously just guessing and raising questions that may trigger some answers for you.

Yeah the clunk is a bit confusing. If it was just a click then you would know that relay is engaging and it would probably be a loose connection to the starter motor. The fact that you have torn into the wiring makes me suspect something got crossed up although I think the connectors are all dissimilar making getting them mixed up difficult.

I guess you could say the clunk is a click.

It's hard to mix up the receptacles as you say so it's not that.

The indicator switch is below the light/horn/kill switch.

I've just revived a PM saying that I've probably created a short by relocating the horn.

Check and see if you've got power to the switch. That will tell you where to go next.

Then again if you had sparks/smoke you may already know where to look.

You may be swapped around fuses but you have to do it more carefully.

You short-circuited the 2 horn wires. Check them again and if unused, use some electric tape between them for insulation.

Install new fuse (probably you have burnt both).

There are no mysteries in a such simple electric circuit.

Thanks for your note Dirtbird.

I have checked this morning and yes one fuse is burnt out, other is fine .

Think I'll take horn off all together and see if bike will start on spare fuse. Not sure what you meant re using electrical tape - on horn wire ?

All my previous bikes were kickstart only so electrics are a mystery to me !

If you have no need for the horn or any other ckt like brake lights or directionals, its best to CLEANLY remove them from them harness, or get the race harness. Unplugged connectors, wires moving around where they can rub on the frame can and will wear through from vibration over time. If you need the stuff take the time to waterproof the connectors, unless you live in a desert and never see mud and/or wash water.
