Starter spinning but not kicking bendix out.

Hi guys.

New here, love my Beta, pleased to meet you ;-)

Beta 300 rr (2013)

My Beta's starter stopped doing its thing.

It's still swinging, but its not engaging the engine. Bendix isn't kicking out. I think this started at some point when the battery drained flat. But a recharge hasn't fixed it.

The battery has power, fan works, but I am not sure if it is maybe going bad and not giving enough "oohmph".

Normally when the battery goes a bit flat, this would happen. Then once it charged a bit during the ride, it would kick the bendix out again and engage the motor.

Bendix looks alright (from my limited knowledge on the subject). Havent tried another battery (as I don;t have a compatible one to try).

Any ideas? I was thinking of trying a car battery... not sure if it would be a bad thing. Both are 12V... should be fine, right?

Any ideas?

Sounds like a toasted and/or weak battery. Almost certain a fresh one will take care of you.
It doesn't take much to spin the fan. It does to punch the starter.

try jump starting it. If it works you know it's the battery

If it's the original battery, then it's time to replace.

Mine was doing that too. The ring gear on the fly wheel was working its way off. It even started rubbing the inside of the ignition cover. I had a machine shop press it back on and tack weld it.

Same with my 13 loose ring rubbing on case, push on and tack weld. They added the tacks later to address this issue.

Turns out it was my bendix after all. I finally took it out and noticed that it never "locks" when kicking out. The two parts just spun freely from each other.

Took it to my local autolec and he sent it away to be reconditioned. R900 later, Let's see how long she lasts... (I can see a wire tied around the pack of weights on the inside. Not sure if that was the complete fix, but hey, I could not even open it. so I guess I'll take the wire "clamp".

Thanks for everyone's suggestions.
