S3 Slavens Mule Head

Postby Enmerdeur » Wed Jul 09, 2014 9:24 pm

So ever since I bought my Beta 300 I kept saying to myself that head is identical to my KTM 300. And then when S3 released a head for the Beta 300 I was almost positive since I doubt they would have produced a whole new head for a bike who's numbers are not that big (yet)

I talked to Jeff Slavens and he thought the same thing after having seen a stock Beta head.

In the past with my KTM's I always had Jeff cut my head for our altitude. Best mod ever on the KTM's. Brings back that bottom and grunt that you sea level guys enjoy.

I was mulling over having Jeff work over my Beta's head and then Jeff announced that he was going to be having S3 heads with his specified "Mule" inserts, one for 0-6,000' ASL and one for 6,000'+ ASL. These are designed to still run on pump gas.

So I ordered one. Jeff said I could return it if it didn't fit so off we go.

Here is the head in the box. The black insert is for 0-6K and the silver is the 6K+

And here it is installed. Everything bolted right up.

I got the blue one which is for the Husaberg/Husky 300. Same motor as the KTM as most of you know.

So I installed it with the 6K+ insert and did a compression test. Increases compression by 30 PSI according to my tester.

I have only fired it up in the garage to make sure shes starts and it didn't explode. Going to try and get out tomorrow evening for a test up in our mountains. Please standby.

Thank you for trying this. I was just thinking about sending my head to RB but if you have no problems I think I'll go the Blue head rout to. It would be nice to have a head for high elevation too.

So why would you get a slavens head designed for ktm instead of getting the Beta S3 head?.. even if it bolts on ?.. Seems a bit risky for questionable benefit .. if it doesn't fit or work right... Do you know the difference between the ktm S3 and the Beta S3 heads?..or why it would work better or worse?
One has 3 domes red and $300.. the other 2 and $220 and orange or blue.. but it's for a ktm/husky.. I don't see much info here.. maybe on the S3 site.

S3 site has gasgas, husky, ktm but no Beta.. I guess they are making it an exclusive Beta think sort of like fmf has in the past with their parts.

$75 and instant turn around at RB Designs to get your head cut EXACTLY to fit your motor with perfect squish and any reasonable compression/fuel spec you want. If the squish band is cut tight and consistant it does not have to be as wide and this allows good top end as well as a bottom increase. A bolt on will never be as accurate.

The reason I went with the Slavens is because on the standard S3 head for KTM or Beta the highest compression insert is the one for 0-6K ASL. The Slavens custom insert for 6K+ ASL bumps up the compression more than the standard S3 high compression insert for those of us that ride at nose bleed altitudes.

As far as having a head specifically for Beta, there is really no difference between the Beta head configuration and KTM. They both use flat pistons so there really is nothing different between the two.

Another reason I went this route is I need the ability to switch out to the lower compression for winter riding when we go to Moab or any other desert riding with is around 4K ASL here.

I get that. What I mean by "your bike" is your particular Beta, not a KTM vs Beta question. The thing is compression is only part of the equation, squish clearance and MSV being the other, which is not optimized with a bolt on. You could always have the inserts cut but then why bother with the modular head? A guy over on GGRC found this out with a GG S3 head, big compression boost but sloppy squish so jetting became difficult. You could ebay another 300 head cheap and have that cut for low altitude compression. Nice part, just tossing out options. Did you measure compression and squish clearance ? I'd be interested. Judging by the way it runs stock I'd say squish is fairly close, and compression is conservative.
