Exaust O rings

Postby 18lstroup » Mon Mar 30, 2020 9:11 am

My 17 300rr eats exaust o rings. I only get about 3-10 hours on a set. Is there any way to get them to last longer? I have heard of putting high temp rtv on them. Is this a bad idea?

Have you tried the Viton (high temp) o-rings from a KTM 300? I've had good luck with them. When installing I usually wipe the exhaust port clean and lube the o-rings with premix oil and keep the pipe aligned well as I fit and secure it. Make sure there are no burrs or sharp edges that could be damaging the o-ring during install. I suppose you could check with calipers to make sure the pipe (including the o-ring glands) and port are round.

I agree with DirtDogger300, I have done the same, but I added the copper type high temp silicone also. It keeps it from pissing down the front of the motor. :D

Seems like the OEM Beta O Rings are 43 x 3 mm but the KTM 300's are 44 x 3 mm , is this the idea ? To have a slightly bigger OR that seals better ? Did you notice a tighter fit with the KTM OR's ?

Cheers !

As others have said
New springs, new rubber mount & KTM O Ring will sort your problem

Even the KTM O-rings won’t last very long if you decide you want to be on the leaner side of things. I used to lube with Motul 800 but now do the high temp RTV on the o-rings and some in between them on the pipe.

It is possible that your pipe is bent just enough to create a poor fit into the head. Follow these steps to check:

1. Completely undo and remove the front pipe.
2. Fit the pipe into the head with new o rings but don't attach any of the brackets.
3. Fit the pipe springs and make sure that the pipe sits fully in and square to the head.
4. Loosen off the rubber frame to pipe mounts.
5. Loosely fit the silencer.
6. Refit the front pipe frame mounts.

This should show you if the front pipe is straight. Check round all the frame clearances and see if you can get the mounts to tighten up without pulling the pipe out of square in the head. Using pressure tools to remove dents can make the pipe go out of shape as the forces act on the bends and push them in various directions.

Since I started using 4 exhaust springs, 2 on each side, about a year ago my exhaust O ring problems have gone away.
