Clutch drag on 21 200 RR

Postby bruce991 » Thu Mar 04, 2021 3:22 pm

Just took delivery a week ago and I know it needs broken in much more. Clutch drag is bad when cold as in cannot put into gear without stalling. This is all stock. Factory oil. I then added the Midwest Mountain Engineering lever and adjusted, still not ideal when cold. Once engine has been run 20 minutes and shifted etc. it creeps at idle lever pulled in. I decided to drain and change oil to what they recommended at dealership Motul 10 W 40 Esther based oil. Have not ridden it since it got really cold again here.
Do you find the transmission and clutch will free up once I get a few hours on her? I usually run Belray Gear saver and plan to go to that in the near future. I did bleed the slave and lever felt much better, a couple air bubbles did come out of the slave. I Love the bike other than this issue.

Any advice?

I had the same problem with my 21 200 RR.
I done a reverse bleed from the slave up thru the master cylinder. Then added 0-20 mobile one instead of 10w40 and all is good.

the mountain engineering lever gains leverage by sacrificing slave travel. that would only make the dragging worse

Severe clutch drag from new never went away on my 2016 RR 350. Different fluids, new basket, plates, etc. nothing helped.

My 21 200rr got better after a back bleed. It got even better after adding 0w20 mobile one instead of the 10w40 as reccommended by Beta, I've been using lighter oil for less clutch drag since 2008 and have found it to work great for less clutch drag and most especially for in gear dead engine starts with electric start . BTW I am running the Midwest Mountain clutch lever. They work great, have used them on my last three Beta's.

They do not like heavy oils ie. Rotella, Gear Saver or Klotz flex drive are thinner and work well.

I needed to flush the trans on my 200, and ran ATF for a few rides, that seemed worked as good as the flex drive.

my '19 200RR has always been difficult to shift, figured it would ease up over time but never did ... tried Amsoil 10w40, Spectro SX Clutch Saver (what i used to run in my Husky 165 + 250RR) and Honda HP Trans ... the Honda gear oil has worked the best so far, by a lot, but i've been thinking of going thinner.

thanks for heads up on Klotz Flex Drive, just ordered some to test out.
