Map switch no longer lights up on 2021 300RR Race Edition

Postby jjsilas » Tue Jan 25, 2022 3:09 pm

Has anyone had a map switch stop working, and by not working I mean it doesn't light up. Overall its not a problem on ideal rides, but I've found on wet days, or days when I'm beat, the map switch helps a lot when trying to find traction.

I've disconnected and reconnected it numerous times to see if that's the issue. I also added dielectric grease to eliminate water intrusion. At this point, I'm at a loss and don't want to take to a dealer to wait weeks or more to get it back and find out it was a known and simple fix.

Has anyone experienced this, or something similar?

So from memory my XT has a 3 way plug. One must feed 12v. The other pair must earth and switch action. Try see if the switch itself is working with a multimeter on bare plug.

Then plugged in you should see 12v on a wire. Then you should see a side get earthed back to ground. If that ground wire is broken it won't be working. If it is switching then it might be working but the light or 12v to make light work could be symptom.

It is a 3 wire setup on my bike as well. One wire to a common ground. One to the voltage regulator, and the third to the ECM. I'm seeing resistance on the bike side wiring. But it seems like the switch isn't working at all.

You could try a simple switch ecu to ground which should enable rain mode by pulling a port low. Won't have the pretty light but hey. I've just bought a ebay push button switch mounted to a small bracket to be my horn button (sometimes we have quads sharing our trail rides and a move over toot seems worth trying).

They also listed latch-able ones which should do the trick. But any aftermarket simple switch will do in a pinch.

Hmm, 1 min search, best read it properly as I'm in a cafe out for roadride so no responsibility or recommendation

Thank you, I had already ordered this one before I saw your response. I'm going to give it a shot, it should be here next week.

It also makes it ok to remove the blue cover that I never really liked anyway.

It was the switch. I just installed the replacement from Lang's.

I noticed two things, it seems to have defaulted to the wet map. And that means I might like that map more than I thought since that's how I've been riding the bike for the past few weeks.

The switch is an active latching type that only operates when power is applied across the +12v and ground connections. You won't get any meaningful readings just by using a meter across the wires themselves.

IMHO, it's a pointless switch to put on a dirt bike and the standard location was obviously designed by someone who has never ridden offroad and the price is just taking the piss for a $2 switch. Just replace it with a simple on/off handlebar switch.
