390rr over heating

Postby dan46 » Wed Aug 03, 2016 7:54 pm

I was riding today try to break in the new bike. rode for a hour with temps in the low 90s and the bike started to over heat. was riding in slow 1st gear stuff to 3 gear half throttle. when I got home I needed to add about 2 cups of coolant back in. thinking the fan kit would help but I keep hearing how cool this bikes run and wondering if I have a problem.

thanks for the help

I don't know the 4 stroke Betas very well but the 4 strokes run always hotter than the 2 strokes.
The 300 RR 2 stroke you can get away not to run a fan but on a 4 stroke it's a must.
On my Husky 501 the fan was on as soon as I hit a slow technical section.

Husky 4st's run way way hotter then the Beta. The 390 should be ok in this riding having said that you are running it in. I've ridden mine on an extreme enduro coaching day (trials really) It was 100 in the shade my fan came on once i was very surprised. Mine is a 350 and I can count on my hand the amount of times the fan has come on. Yes it works :)

What radiator guards are you running? The Unibiker rad guards were a pain to install on my 500, but the stock fan wasn't an issue. The horn relocation was a mild problem. The hardest part was installing the cross rod that ties both rad guard together right in the middle of the bike behind front down tube. The Unibiker guards look and feel pretty sturdy once they are all together and installed.

Make sure the cooling system is bled per the manual and topped off to exactly the right coolant height. If you can source any locally, you can add a 1/2 oz of water-wetter to help but I wouldn't go to any fancy coolants. Try it and ride some slow stuff again. My last measure would be to add a catch bottle but from what I've seen, the Beta should not need it.

In short, re-bleed the cooling system, top off properly and use a 1/2 oz of water-wetter if you have any locally.
