dreaded oil question..

Postby Cruiser » Sun Oct 30, 2016 4:41 am

ok,, so, well, here it goes. The oil question. time for the first oil change on my 350 and I'm having issue finding the motul oils the book requires. 7100 10/40 not too much an issue. but the transoil expert 10/40? So far zip.. I did find one place that had a bottle of it in 10/30. So,, is everyone using factory recommended oil or on your own favorites? and what compares to the transoil? First bike I've ever had that has separate oils.
Thanks,
Steve

I use a 10/50 in both 125hrs still going great. Use the same oil makes it easier. Tried a 5/40 in the box prefer 10/50.

No I don't use Motul I find it to expensive. I have not found the box notchy, Have had false neutrals but found it due to gear lever position and it being too far from the foot peg for me. All fixed now and no issues. Its not going to hurt to try it and its much more convenient than having to use two oils.

I use Motorex almost exclusively.
I hate having a bazillion different brands and grades of oil on my shelves and I've been using Motorex for several years in most of my bikes. I still stock my shelves with a few different grades for different bikes. Pricing might seem high but it's all about the same ballpark for top line synthetics. Motorex also offers a mineral oil that I run in my Cheney, BSA and a couple of Bultacos. Most of my other vintage bikes I use their transmission oils. I also use Motorex in the differentials and gearboxes of my trucks and cars. They don't produce suitable viscosities for the engines or they'd get it too.
One place I don't use it is for my premix. There I use Optimol.

Ha this is where we get into a "my oil is better than your oil" discussion :) I use Penrite HPR10. OIls are oils just make sure they meet the specs as laid down by the manufacturer. IMHO motorcycle oils are over priced and made out to be special when they are not.

HPR DIESEL 10 is a premium high performance, semi synthetic, SAE 10W-40, non-friction modified engine oil. It contains a DOUBLE LAYER of engine wear protection with FULL ZINC and Penrite's advanced EXTRA TEN technology. It contains a combination of high technology additives, including increased dispersant levels and low shear viscosity modifiers. It protects against corrosion, oil oxidation and sludge under all operating conditions.

HPR DIESEL 10 is recommended for use in petrol, light duty diesel engines, LPG/Dual fuel & four stroke motorcycles including those with wet clutches. It is also suitable for use in petrol and LPG engines as a mixed fleet oil.

8-)

It's also about 90 Australian bucks for 20 litres.

The one I use HPR10 is fully synthetic. Costs about $40au for 5L still cheap and good.
