2016 430rs weird idle/noise

Postby kyle01 » Sun Apr 16, 2017 1:12 pm

Hi all, first time beta owner, new member here- been lurking a while.

Here's the deal- just picked up a new (2016) 430rs that the dealer had on the floor, under 2 miles on the clock... brand spankin new.

Start it up, all good. Sounds great, quiet motor! Rap the throttle (wow, responsive... I'm coming off of a gasgas ec250 and didn't expect the 4t to wow me in that respect) Anyhow, after a blip of the throttle it settles to a really low idle for a few seconds and ticks pretty bad (sounds like the cam chain slapping around)

Now, my dealer has a great mechanic- he told me to expect some weird s@it for a while as the efi is a "learning" system and in my mind I'm writing it off as that... but I'm on vacation and away from my bike... so I'm obsessing over it.

Any thoughts?

You have a 1 year warranty. Put some time on the motor and see how it sounds, if you are still concerned take it in.
As with most engines Betas smooth out a little after initial run-in.

4T's have a lot more moving parts than your old ec. My Husky and ktm 4T's make a lot of clacking and ticking noises, but they just keep going.

I have a 2017 430 RRS and mine does the same thing. Was told the same from the dealer also. Like they said it has a 1 year warranty on it (that a 1st for me).

After hearing my friends KTM 500 EXC, I was very happy with the amount of noise that came from my Beta 500. My XR650R was very noisy, as well. In a effort to make things lighter, cases, covers, etc, are minimal thickness and not engineered for quiet. The few DRZ's that I have been around, seemed to be pretty quiet engines, but were probably much heavier because of it.

I'm sure it's no big deal... as I said, VERY quiet lump for a 4t, and when the idle dips it's just that much more pronounced. Weather still sucks by me... I'm trying to get some time on it whenever I possibly can. It'll either go away or it won't and I'll bring it to my dealer. The warranty is a big deal! Although I'm guessing I won't be needing it on the long run.

Could be the auto decompressor. If you bike is still hunting for its idle speed it might be running slow enough to engage the valve lifter.

I know it's long dead but I figured I'd just follow up on the weird idle situation. Dealer diagnosed a weak battery and adjusted the stepper motor. Rode the bike hard for 6 hours afterward and she never missed a beat that wasn't operator related! Maybe I need to adjust MY stepper.
