390RR Racers.... Sprocket change?

Postby redrider » Fri Jul 21, 2017 7:03 pm

Anyone racing or riding a 390, have you opted to change the sprocket(s)? If so, to what?

Reason for question is the low end torque nature of the animal.....wondering if anyone has gone down a tooth on the rear.

Thanks....

it's an interesting subject. I know folk with 300's like mine, not just Beta's, who say whoa! this thing is a handful, I'll go up one on the counter shaft and tame it down.

I run the same gearing as Marty on my 300, I geared it down using the XT rear sprocket. I've found that works much better for me, I can ride a gear higher to keep it user friendly and I find I can just leave it in third when I hear guys around me changing 2-3.

I also have a nice low first now for crawling out of trouble. Most of the guys around me are on 300 2t's and long transport sections are not popular with any of them. Still if it happens I am happy to burble along at 85 kph. Acceleration in the upper gears is instant with the 13/51 so again, not a lot of gear changing for old Johnno.

Everyone has a different perspective and different needs i guess.

I've been really happy with the 13/49 on my 300s and the 13/50 on the 350. I tried one tooth more on both in the rear and didn't like it as much as the stock ( suits the way I ride I guess ). Haven't had the opportunity to throw a leg over a 390 yet but have heard it has significantly more torque right off idle compared to the 350. In tighter single track (Virginia woods) I'm not sure more is needed than the 350 already offers, but when it opens up I like the idea of a few more horses.

Probably need to ride a 390 to get a feel for how it compares to the 350. Seems the 390 reviews are always positive though.

I've got the stock gearing on my 16 390rr. I'm really happy with it. Unfortunately no racing yet this year. Our season has been a bit of a wash with rain. I have about 1000km of single track on the bike since the end of May. We ride tight single track and most of our trail rides are at race pace. The stock gearing really works for me. I'm mostly third gear and go with this bike. On the hot map it comes out of tight corners very strong. Everyone comments on the torque and the sound it makes when it is coming up on the LOL. I'm coming off a small bore 2t that was a very active ride. My riding buddies say I'm much faster on the beta. I certainly feel faster and don't seem to be working near as hard. A couple races coming up in August so I guess my results will tell the tale.

I found this in a search. Might be helpful. Don't really know how to post it on this forum. Here is the link. Maybe someone can post it.

Thanks!

I rode a 390 back to back with my 350 yesterday...... Wow the engine characteristics are different. The 350 revs and the 390 does too, but never needs too. The torque off the bottom is impressive. With a 13/49 on the 390 and 13/50 on the 350 the 390 still felt much stronger off the bottom. In tighter flowing trail I like the 350 more, bit if its a little more open the acceleration of the 390 would be intoxicating.

Both are great!

Put the details in gearingcommander and it give you a good idea what's going on.
