Oil Pump Plastic Gears

Postby DJR » Fri Dec 15, 2017 6:19 pm

To date my 390 RR has given me 0 issues, great bike, don't think there is a bike on the market that suits me better. I now have about 3500K (150 hours). I have not replace the plastic oil pump gears?? I realize there is a requirement to change these at 100 hours but see very little discussion on this, and amongst my many friends that own these machines, no one has replaced these gears. Has anyone experience a failure/ is it critical to replace the gears?

There has been failures on the older system not the newer two gear set up that I have seen. Its a pretty important area they are cheap and easy to do why push your luck.

I believe I did mine at 40-50 hours and they looked no different than the new ones, if you have to pull the cover or basket for any reason it's cheap and easy to do while your half way in there.

Mine were done at 86 hrs... basically the end of the season. The gears still looked new. I had them replaced with the plastic. Next year, the bike will need the clutch plates and fibres replaced. I’ll do the gears again and that time. For $20.00 in parts, it pretty cheap insurance.
The 690 gets rockers every other year. They are $200.00 peace of mind.

Aren’t the replacements metal?

you can go metal or plastic, if you go with the metal gears you wont need to change them again, plastics will need to be done every 100hrs.

Did mine yesterday, about 120 hours very small amount of wear, would appear they would easily go twice the distance.

Its a little less than a two hour slightly pain in the arse job
