Stalling when engaging clutch uphill

Postby incaugneto » Tue Jan 16, 2018 10:58 pm

I recently purchased a 2018 390 rrs and so far am loving it. I took it on a 100 mile dirt/pavement trip last weekend and about 50 miles in I was going up a steep paved hill in 2nd and started bogging down so I went to down shift into 1st and when I engaged the clutch it stalled out.

It stalled a couple more times on the hill every time I pulled the clutch in switching between 1st and 2nd (switched to 2nd because the hill mellowed out a bit) so I pulled off the road and it stalled again when coming to a stop on a flat surface and the bike didn't want to turn over so I had to bump start it and headed home. On the way home it didn't have any more problems.

I was wondering if you could offer some insight site on what went wrong or was this just user error because of my lack of experience on a dual sport?

I can’t tell for sure but I think if the bike is bogging you just throttle up a little as you are down shifting.

I don’t have a four stroke, but remember reading that letting it warm up at idle for the required amount of time is crucial. firfighter would know...shoot him a pm

You can try the 10 minute stepper motor reset to see if that helps.

Make sure motor is stone cold, then start.

Do not touch throttle at any time during process.

Let idle for 10 min. or until motor reaches 215 degrees and fan kicks on.

Kill motor and turn off ignition.

Your stepper motor is now reset and you should have a consistent low idle.

Normal warming up motor for 4-5 minutes before riding seems to be key for these FI Betas to run/idle properly.

Hope this helps!

My 2018 390 RR-S seems prone to stall too. But for me it is on the super slow technical stuff. It could be me, but my KTM 350 XCF-W didn't seem to have this problem.

I've done the stepper motor reset. No dice.

The dealer reset the ECU with +100 rpms on idle. Still no dice.

I do have a Midwest Engineering clutch lever installed .... perhaps I don't have it adjusted correctly and there is some clutch drag. I'll put the stock lever back on to see if that helps. Doubtful.

If all else fails, I guess I'll finally bite the bullet and get a Rekluse. Hate to do that as I've lived without one thus far.

You already try pumping in oil at the slave cyl? Mine was stalling when pulling in the clutch downhill. Refreshed the oil and she’s solid now.

I'll try that too. Are you on a FI 4-stroke Beta?

Negatron...300 smoker. I realize most of the post seems FI/idle related but thought it was worth a shot before getting a Rekluse
