Broken counter balance shaft

Postby Sweepea » Mon Apr 09, 2018 8:08 am

Anyone else experience this? Was riding in a hare scramble this weekend and ran into a Beta mechanic who said he could hear a an engine rattle on my bike as I rode by that he says is a broken counter balance shaft. He sounded pretty convincing. He says that he has repaired this several times on other bikes. Mine is a 2016 350 RR.

Maybe, maybe not. Unlikely you'd be able to keep running for long if truly broken, but if there's a new noise coming from the engine its certainly worth investigating.

On gen1 2014 350 engine, counter balancer bearing disintegrated and blocked oil galleries with the result being a seized cylinder head (ie camshafts). Admittedly, this was a racing bike at the end of the season. Bike also spent its first 20 hours as a test ride.
So an isolated example but it doesn't hurt to check it.....

Thanks team. Headed to my local (Miami) Beta shop with the bike tomorrow. I think the bearing disintegration is probably the culprit. Dealer says the bike won't run if the counter balance shaft is broken; makes sense. To be continued...

P.S. he was a competitors pit crew mechanic, but they were running a Beta along with two KTMs.

Final answer: countershaft needle bearing was wiped out and scored up the countershaft. Repair job cost about $650; had to wait over a week for parts. What is up with the parts availability. I have no reliable source here in Miami/Ft. Lauderdale.

Bearing failure at CS sounds like chain too tight maybe?
