Will the 450rr need jetting for mountains ?

Postby Hyde » Tue May 20, 2014 3:19 pm

Will be riding 5000-7000 this weekend, other than adjusting the fuel screw as needed, maybe drop the needle ??

I'll answer my own question.

I didn't do squat, didn't even touch the fuel screw and the bike ran and started perfect, good fuel mileage, going from EFI back to a carb was a none issue.

Though the years I have had a number of friends with 4 stokes in the mountains of Colorado and jetting seemed to always be an issue. My 2 stokes seemed to be easier to jet. last year a friend shows up with a 400 ktm and does nothing with his sea level jetting. His bike ran good. That shue surprised me. After that if I get a 4 stoke you can bet I'll be asking for input.

Hyde,

Noticed you have a 2 stroke and a 4 stroke. Where do you ride each? I bought a home in Arizona and I may consider a 4 stroke for the west to compliment my 2 stokes.

It's tough to pick which one to ride, after riding the 4t in the Black Hills for three days I thought I was leaning toward the 4t, but riding last night at the secrete Hyde compound, with sandy rutted berms for corners the 250rr just rails and blows out of corners so hard I need to were a belt to keep my pants up.

My 250 is really dialed in and the 450 will get there, the races in Minnesota are allot like the east coast w/o most of the rocks, tight 3rd gear tree to tree stuff and the biggest elevation change is a couple hundred feet.

Every bike in our group (KTM250&300,RMZ450,CRF450,450SX) last week steamed except the 450 Beta, with no fan or miracle juice in the radiator, no over flow can, I purposely left it stock to see how it would do heat wise in the tight nasty stuff, the fan on my 500 would have been running most of the day on the same stuff.

I did not realize you were from Minnesota. I came from Wisconsin and road Minnesota many years. I know what you mean on the great cornering traction in the soil. My brother and I organized the Black River Falls Enduro for 25 years. The northern trails is where I got hooked on 250 MX bikes. I've been ins Missouri for 13 years now and it is all loose rock. last year I went up to Wisconsin and rode for a weekend and fell back in love with all the corner speed in the loamy sand.

I had the same experience with my 520 4T. Didn't need to touch a thing, ran fine up to 7500' MSL.

Just got back from Mammoth on my new 400 RS and it ran great. 8k up to 10k feet no issues at all. I turned the fuel screw in a little but I'm sure if I left it alone I wouldn't notice any difference.

Good to know; I'll be in Mammoth riding in a month! Thanks for sharing. Wait... haven't decided which bike to take. Is Mammoth-area more techy/steep/slow (2T GasGas) or faster/flowy/long-day (4T Beta) country?
