stripped transmission drain plug

Postby Sweepea » Wed May 23, 2018 7:23 am

While in the shop to get the CS bearing replaced, the mechanic either cross-threaded or over tightened the transmission drain plug and stripped the threads. Of course he didn't let me know, and I had to discover it myself when I was doing a regular oil change and couldn't get the plug to re-seat after my oil change. I sifted through the used oil and found some of the damaged threads. His response is he wants to insert a helicoil to repair the threads. Anyone try this yet? Anyone know the size and thread count? Any other ideas? Do I let him touch it again?

I prefer Time-Serts to Helicoils.

I also think Beta even sells a drain plug repair kit.

The word is coil so it will get you wet.

Loctite and seal so an insert,
Or use the next size fine thread and a next available size plug or fabricated plug.

Don’t take it back, try to get the whole inner clutch cover.

Threads are M14 x 1.5mm. What stripped the bolt or the threaded hole? If you have to repair internal threads with an insert you can pretty much make them what you want (within reason)

I think timeserts are perfectly acceptable. Stripped drain plugs are pretty common and the inserts are stronger than the original threads

Thanks team, going to insist on the Time-Sert repair. I have always suspected that the Miami shop uses impact wrenches and now I'm certain. Every time I get the bike back from them I find over-torqued nuts/bolts. I had to use a 4 foot cheater bar to get my front axle nut off after they changed a tire for me.

So you’re taking it back?

I think I'm going to do it myself, so I know it's done right.

What pound of flesh should I try to extract from my local dealer (Miami)?

Timesert is the best and it's super expensive.. still better than alternative. I stripped the oil drain on my Beta 525. I was being careful but it still didn't matter. It wanted to strip. I was so bummed. I found a guy on TT who had done the same thing on his ktm 525 and had the kit which had around 4 or 5 timeserts. price locally for the kit was $440. if I remember right. I bought it for around 2 hundred bucks? forget.. but try to get the timesert. It's the best and you'll never have to deal with stripping again.. got some vids on youtube to familiarize. It was super fast and easy in my case and the steel threads are super solid.
