Well, my gear oil drain plug was over torqued from the factory and I have been limping it by for a year since it didn't leak. A couple of weeks ago the remaining threads came out with the plug. I already had the time sert (m14x1.5), but didn't see this thread first, and instead purchased some 12.7 mm inserts to do it with. Mine were around 25mm long in the kit. I had little trouble drilling the hole (attempted to keep it straight), and tapped it slowly while reversing the tap 1/2 turn every full turn. Once I reamed the hole for the insert, I poured a quart of 10w40 JASO-MA gear oil through the clutch side to wash out any remaining debris from drilling & tapping. I was surprised just how much metal came out. Next, I drove in the insert (screwed in with drive tool), and attempted to flush the box again. This is when I realized that I needed access to those bottom threads open. I assumed the drain hole in the right side of the threads was simply to get ALL of the gear oil out. Nope, almost none will drain if that hole is blocked. I was careful, and used small drill bits in increasing size to drill a hole to match the original one just over 1/8". My hole is slightly smaller so it drains slower, but I usually let my bike drain for 30 min + anyway. So, all said and done, I dumped another quart to flush anything from the thread drilling, and she is good as new, well, actually better since the time sert is steel.
