500rr-s fuel mileage

Postby allkidd » Mon Jul 02, 2018 9:33 am

Guys,

I purchased my 2018 500rr-s, at least partially to ride on long rides. Thinking 4 gallons would be plenty, I purchased the 4 gallon IMS tank. Now I'm finding that 100 miles is about max on a tank. My KTM 500 friends don't use nearly as much gas as I do and I weigh less than all of the KTM friends.

I guess that I have a couple questions. What kind of mileage do others get on their Beta 4 strokes? My other thought is whether the rain or sun mode make a difference in mileage? I've been running sun mode pretty much the whole time and I'm hoping that it will do better in rain mode.

I have 2016 500RS with 3.1 tank and routinely get over 100 to tank with 14/49 gearing, and about 20-25mph average speed mixed riding. Low hour engine will use more fuel until broken in, about 20 hours.

Thanks Deck1, I'm geared with 13/51 so that could make the difference. Same type riding averaging 20-25 on forest type trails/roads. I've got 30 hours so possibly could still improve.

My 390 is getting 25+ mpg now that motor is broken in at over 80hrs. I'm running 13/48 all 2nd-3rd gear woods.

oh, I also am running the stock mapping, no map switch, no FMF cal loaded. I have G2 throttle but I think it has me twisting harder! :D

My friend has '15 500 EXC that always uses less fuel, and he is remapped with Akro exhaust. You likely will never get close to their MPG but with regear, definitely should be about 120 miles to tank.

I also have a 2018 Beta 500RR-S. I have the 3 gallon tank with 13/48 gearing and I just measured the MPG after doing a 156 mile ride with a highway only leg and a single track, fireroad, highway leg. I got 33mpg on the highway cruising at 65-70mph and 38MPG with the mixed riding. In open desert riding I can get a little over 100 miles per a tank. I think your gearing is definitely affecting your mileage. The Beta's do run richer than the LEAN KTMs so no surprise your buddies get better MPG. The Beta will also smoke the KTM in a straight line stock. Just comes to show the Beta is great right out of the box even with 30ccs less than the KTM.

We drove the 498 and the injected 480 side by side on the same sandwashed tracks: the 480 uses more than the 498. 1L:18 vs 1L:17km

The 480, so the 500rr probably also, was hard to tame. Way more aggressive on the gas. So I'm confident to say that a throttle tamer will also support your wallet!

I try not to wait since I dont carry aux fuel but I did get my reserve light fully on at 60 miles (mostly single track). 2018 w/ 3 hours. So now I top off anytime I see a gas station.

Wow, those new square motors must use more fuel. My 520 (498cc) consistently gets around 45-50 mpg with mixed slow ST and high speed fire roads. Odometer is slaved to the Voyager gps, but is within a few percent of my buddy’s KTM readings, so fairly sure the mileage is accurate. At Death Valley this past spring, my 3.1 tank got me 125-130 miles range without a problem and no reserve needed, although I carried a 2 gal Rotopax for my buddies.;). I figure 135 miles on a tank to be safe and always carry extra fuel if going more than 120 or so between fuel stops.

I just got back from some mountain riding with my 2018 480 rr re which consisted of lots of single track and some connecter roads. We did 67 miles and I added 1/2 gallon of fuel to the stock tank plus another 32oz to make it to the truck. I have 30 hrs on the bike and only get 25 mpg consistently. I am having a ball riding the bike but the fuel economy is garbage. Is this normal?
