New 2017 Beta 390 RR-S Owner.. Ticking Engine?

Postby mezerr » Wed Sep 12, 2018 7:14 am

Hello. I have a 2017 Beta 390 RR-S. Just took ownership of it. It has 68 hours on it.

When cold, I don't hear much ticking. But as engine warms up to operating temp, and after riding with the revs up for 5-10 minutes, it's starts ticking lightly, and then gets a bit louder as the engine warms up further. It's a fairly fast tick. It's a little quieter at idle, and seems to get a bit louder as the engine is revving and moving down the road. I've done the stepper motor reset, so it's not just a low idle issue.

I'm not familiar with these engines, so not sure if this is normal or not. Is a little bit of ticking normal?

Here's a video where you can hear this ticking. Sorry for the talking, it's the only video I have: https://youtu.be/mB0DfuHNR9Q

I have not checked valve clearances. I will get dealer to check.

Really hard to tell from your video, but motor sounds perfectly normal, same as my '17 390.

Thanks for the reply. So let me ask you this. When your 390 warms up, do you hear an audible ticking noise from engine? Fairly rapidly?

My 390 is a very noisy motor. Loud mechanical, clanky sounding. I took mine back to the dealer and we started up another 390 on the floor. It sounded the same. Besides being noisy, it runs super stong. So I ignore it. I also have an alum skid plate which amplifies the sound some

Ya.. mine has that clanky sound as well. But I can't really hear other bikes ticking when checking them out on Youtube.

well, you can do what I did. Put an FMF powercore muffler on it. Def adds some snap to the throttle response. Plus it's so freaking loud, I can't hear anything

Not sure I should contact the dealer or not.. they are busy and hate to bother them with something simple... just want to make sure nothing is wrong.
