2018 390RR-S Burning Oil (Smoking)

Postby DelusionalRetiree » Wed Sep 26, 2018 12:51 pm

Has anyone else out there experienced their RR-S engine emitting exhaust smoke (burning oil)?

I followed the recommended break-in instructions on my new 2018 390RR-S, but at 325 miles, I just happened to notice that the engine blew smoke if left to idle for a short period of time and then I blipped the throttle. It was like a 2-stroke! It's been my experience that this is characteristic of bad valve seals.

Beta didn't agree and reluctantly approved the replacement of the piston rings. They then requested that the mechanic run the engine through four heat-cool cycles before returning it to me. While this did reduce the amount of smoking, it didn't eliminate it. They then asked me to run the engine hard for a number a of miles. So I went out and flogged it for 50+ miles. No improvement.

Beta is saying that they are experiencing this on the 350's and 390's

Anyone else in my boat???

yes. my 390 smokes a bit. Not as much as you describe.
My motor is also very noisy. Lots of clanky mechanical sounds and now has developed a whirring sound that increases with rpm. I think maybe the rekluse clutch but idk. Still runs strong though

pimpdown: Please post your results after you've had a chance to ride the bike.

You certainly got more parts replaced then I did. All Beta approved for me was the rings. I don't know why they wouldn't approved the replacement of the valve seals while the mechanic was in there. I've now been asked to put a few hundred more miles on it and do another video to show results.

FirfFighter: Love your, honest and real videos. Have been following you since you got your 390. I am jealous however, about where/what you get to ride!

Thanks! I am very blessed to be able to ride in such a great part of the country. I just did 35 miles of very tight desert singletrack today with my oldest son! Desert singletrack is quite unique with scrub pine trees, loose sandy soil, and a few weathered carcasses laying around!

I'm glad you have enjoyed the videos, I am not much of a videographer and a hack rider, but was hoping to help guys out with 390 info since there's not a lot out there on the bike.

Sorry to hear about your bike not being satisfactory! I've been lucky I guess. I'm pretty anal on maintenance and change my oil every couple hundred miles.
