Flameouts driving me nuts-Fixed!!

Postby Sweepea » Fri Sep 28, 2018 11:29 am

Team, I have a 2016 350 that has been flaming out on me. It happens when after at idle in a turn or even while shifting I open the throttle back up. Then "pop" a quick backfire, then flameout. Not every time, but with annoying regularity. What is causing this? Will a hotter plug fix it?

What you're describing sounds like a pretty lean condition. I'd check your jetting or, if FI, your tune.

My Husky FE501 was delivered very lean, and did the same thing. New tune (via new Vortex ECU) and made all the difference. Likewise with my older 450EXC - new JD jets for my riding conditions and same good result.

What gear are you in? I’ve found that if I’m in too high of a gear I can make my 16 390 flame out when I get back on the throttle.

It's not stalling. It happens as soon as I crack the throttle after being at idle; I can make it happen stopped in neutral. I agree with the lean mix diagnosis. The bike is FI. I am in Miami and my only dealer just left town, so I don't have any way to check or adjust the FI. Can a KTM tech read and adjust the FI?

Sweatpee, as stupid as this sounds, try another battery. Borrow one from a friend rather than buying one to test. My reasoning on this is that my friend with a 2017 390 was having the same trouble for a year. Back to the dealer numerous times, remapped often and one year later a new battery was installed and the problem solved.
The shitty aspect of this is that a third friend suggested switching batteries months earlier but we didn't take the suggestion seriously.

Success!! The problem was a corroded FI contact. Back to normal. Now, how do I get the pesky FI light to reset? It wasn't on during the flameout phase. Please don't say take it to the dealer.

Good find! I'll be checking mine as I have the same issue at times. Some rides it feels like every big corner or large G-out. some rides only once.
Thanks,

Most (but not all) MIL lights will shut off if you disconnect the battery and leave the ECU unpowered for a period of time.
