Header Glowing Red Hot?

Postby Youngster » Sat Dec 08, 2018 7:14 pm

The moto: 2016 500RS (fuel injected)

I bought a carbon fiber header guard. Just after install I warmed the moto (for about 3 min) up to see if the CF piece would smoke a bit during 1st start up after install. It was nearly dark out and I noticed the first 4 inches of the header glowing red. I rode the bike around for a few miles and the radiator temp never went above 170* and the moto acted normal. Still, if I pulled over and let it idle for half a minute the red glow would slowly come back. This could have been happening for a while and never noticed before.

Is this normal for a fuel injected Beta 4-stroke? Thoughts?

(yes, I did the stepper motor reset recently)

BTW, this moto has an FMF Power Core muffler and appropriate IF mapping for it. All EPA stuff has been removed.

I think the exhaust pipe may be titanium.

If this is the case, the titanium will glow orange/red at these temps.

I do not think it is cause for concern.

Not unusual, and not just on Beta 4Ts.

Have a friend with older YZ250F, rebuilt the carb, was idling in his garage, and freaked out when exhaust was glowing hot. It seams to be normal on single wall tubing exhaust. Keep in mind, that idling in the garage is really not what the exhaust is designed for, too.

Right. The pipes like to have some air moving over them. A lot of bikes have fans to keep the coolant temp from rising to dangerous levels, but there's really nothing to cool the exhaust.
