2015 500rs main shaft splines

Anyone heard of this? While riding in the desert the splines on my main output shaft sheered off. The splines on the countershaft sprocket looked ok. Any ideas on how this could happen? I put a new shaft in and have rode about 100 miles so far. The bike has about 295 hours and 7000miles. By the way I replaced the plastic oil pump gears for the first time, they looked to have about 3 minutes of life left in them.
