Depending where you are and the bike, middle clip for higher altitudes or 2 for sea level (one richer).
The off idle burble has more to do with the pilot jet and air screw as the needle does mainly 1/4 to 3/4 open throttle.
From what I found the beta 2 strokes don't like to be too rich at the first 1/4 throttle.

The needle likes to operate in #3. One position is often too much of a change. Always get the NEDJ as well for half clip position fine tuning.

I have the JD kit for my 2017 300 and it is a game changer. I love the way it cleans up the power and adds more bottom end. The power valve modification probably has something to do with it.

The jetting chart that comes with it is much simpler than the Beta one and easier to tune.

Last week I swapped my Lectron for a JD 38mm Airstryker Keihen it came with a 45P, 175M and I installed their blue needle, clip at #3 as most of my riding is between 3 - 6K in elevation. Bottom end is night n day better! However, as I figured my mileage dropped significanly from 30 plus to around 20mpg. Bike was too muddy to notice how much spooge there was. 2 days later I rode at a local area (elevations from sea level to maybe 800feet) bike ran great but the spooge was off the charts. I've since re jetted to a 38P 165M with the NECJ needle clip at #3, AS out 2 turns (for now). Runs smoother, have only had it out on local roads as it's been too rainy to give it the official test. Regarding JD's recommended jetting for my bike I think it was a bit rich....Have never run anything close in my KTM 300. Looking forward to see how things go with the present set up.

A 38 carb. needs bigger jets than a 36. We are running 40p, 170 m in the 36 carb. You my need to work your way down slower. I am not a jetting expert, just saying be carful.

Thanks for that - this is my first experience with a 38mm carb, some research showed me you're absolutley correct.

2015 300RR
pilot; 38
main: 165
needle: N2ZW
clip; 2
AS: 1.5 out
Temp: 38F
Elevation: 1k - 2K

It was cold this past weekend, and it was the first time that stock jetting has given me problems. I bought the bike used, and this was only my 4th ride. I was getting a lean condition and a hanging idle. I ordered both the NECJ and NECW needles yesterday. I'm planning on running a NECW in position 3 till summer time when it gets 80 and 90F, then I will switch it out for the NECJ. I have a buddy that runs his 250 race with a NEDW needle in position 3 with good results.

Also, the previous owner had put a BPR6ES plug in the bike. Probably contributed to a lean condition by running hotter than normal. I swapped it for the stock BR7ES. Will report back with results

2015 300RR
pilot; 38
main: 165
needle: NECW
clip; 3
AS: 1.5 out
Temp: 70F
Elevation: 0 - 1k ft

Ran a little rich. Probably because of the weather. Didn't run bad, and I would rather be rich than lean. The NECW needle does make the bike pull different. It's very linear like a 4t. Needs more testing though

After more than several rides I've got my (38mm Kehein) carb set at:

JD red needle #3
170m
45p
AS 2 turns thereabouts

Elevation 2 - 5K
temps vary from 30s to 70

Power is incredible compared to the Lectron, mileage is maybe 25 mpg, might go up
if I ride a different not so straight up and down technical area. Increase in performance
is worth the mileage decrease IMO.
