Air Box Issues 300rr 2015

Postby Duffy » Sat Nov 28, 2015 4:35 pm

Anyone had issues with their air box accumulating mud and water? The rubber drain plug is worthless as it always clogs. I used to have standing water and mud in my air box after riding. Since I took the plug out there hasn't been any mud or water, but maybe not good later down the road!?!? With all that said I was riding yesterday and my bike stopped running and wouldn't start! So tore it down today carb, was filthy, and mud that basically formed into a rock was wedged in my reed which obviously was the culprit. I assume this accumulated during the build up in my air box then hardened because ever since I removed the drain no water or mud accumulated.

If that was the case then the ball would have still had to have passed your air filter ... not very likely. You may be pulling junk into your carb through the carb vents however.

It sounds to me like you're not getting the filter properly seated in the air box.

I agree with your plug statement...it seems too stiff to open but I did keep mine in. I have never experienced standing water in my air box though when riding. However when Washing the bike and I see water would accumulate and I always help open the drain plug by hand so it won't sneak past the air box plastic wash shield.
My air box concerns are the tabs snapping off the cover and the tang not having enough tension to hold the cover in place. The other pia is the pin that Holds the air box on keeps coming of the wire air filter hold down.

Get rid of that duck bill drain valve. Cut a triangle shape piece of foam that is a slight compression fit in the air box well. This will allow splash water to drain through and hold dirt from clogging the hole. No, it won't prevent water from entering from the bottom but either will the cover. Let's face it side access air boxes suck for water crossings. I don't ride mine through rivers like I did with some of my older bikes. Get the Twin Air boot cover and wash the air box with the bike. No worries then, just stuff a rag in the boot behind it just in case. Mine has been fine for a couple years, no leaks.

A good mod for the cover my brother did is scrap the clips in favor of clip nuts and stainless button head bolts. Still easy enough to get off and if you add some weather strip in the cover groove there is a much better seal as you can compress it much tighter. Probably help prevent the tabs breaking too as its held tighter.

Glen , could you please get a picture of your brothers mod if possible. Ive had some issues with those chinsy clips that hold the cover on. Lost my air box cover on the trail.

Not sure exactly what he used for the nuts, next time I see the bike I'll take a pic but I should be able to source or come up with something fairly easy. For the cover its simply pull the pins and drill holes through.

The KTM clips don't break as easy but they seem to eject the cover easier for some reason. I have found mine loose on several occasions since using them. Beta clips are OK with grease and a lot of care.

The 2016 300 rr has done away with the silly rubber vent.
It now has a simple shaped hole in the bottom of the airbox.
After a ride its no longer full of water like the earlier version.

I pulled the air box valve out and "relaxed" the flapper valve with a utility knife and at the same time opened the bottom portion of it a little. It helps with getting water out of the bottom without leaving it open but still not helpful for a large amount of water coming into the box.
