250rr 2015 starter motor "freewheeling"

Postby newbeta » Thu Aug 03, 2017 1:50 pm

Hi!

Every now and then my starter motor on my beta sort doesn't engage and just makes a singing noise when I push the button.
Have happened a couple of times lately, but not that often. Bike have about 50 hours.
Though this starter motor was supposed to be bullet proof.

Ideas?

Hi,

Welcome to club Beta.

It sounds like the pinon is not travelling along the bendix and egaging in the teeth on the flywheel. If you take off the alternator cover in the bottom right hand corner (as you are looking at it obviously) you can see the bendix. The manual says to put a small amount of oil in the small recess. Give that a go and see what results you get.

Cheers

Mine does the same thing and has since new. It may be Bedix lubrication but I guess it doesn't bother me much since it's about 1 in 10 starts.

Mine does the same thing randomly. Pull the cover, when it does it will usually leave some small metal shavings that have to be cleaned up as these can gum up the works. Also a pain since everything is magnetized. I also throw some oil in the recess when I am in there. In fact I will be in there this evening since it happened before my last race. Cost me the hole shot, still pulled 2nd and 2nd for the race.

While you have the cover off spray WD40 inside the bendix openings as best you can until it runs out clean. Blow out lightly with compressed air. The bendix has a sprag clutch inside it that can freewheel if it becomes dirty or sticky causing the starter to just spin.
