Diode question

Have a 2017 250 race ed. Does the diode have any affect on charging voltage going to the battery? I was getting erratic readings and figured it was the regulator. Replaced that and it did not cure the issue. Getting around 17v. Stole the diode off a 300RR and that seemed to work. Now getting 14.5v at half throttle. Even with the old regulator I'm now getting 14.5v. Can someone chime in and explain things for me? Not electrical savvy at all. Thanks

The race editions have them on the 2017's? My 2016 does not.
