Do I have a regulator failing or a Diode?

Postby LRM » Tue Aug 13, 2019 8:44 am

I have a '18 Xtrainer, that had two ODO's in 4 hours of run time. I like to keep good records on my bikes (because I have 3 each) because I ride about 3-4 days a week. So I installed a Trail Tech Striker in the ODO's place.
Now the TT is indicating that my voltage while running is up as high as 15.9 vdc when running.. Do I have a regulator failing or a Diode? I want to change the stock battery and install a Lithium-Ion. But I know that the better battery won't take that kind of voltage.

Where do I start?

Take your main earth (ground) off, clean it- reinstall with either dielectric grease, or conductive grease (expensive for conductive).
Also make sure the regulator is well earthed.

You may have a failing ground bundle in the harness. Watch for other indications like intermittent horn, lights, switch gear, etc. Watch your OI inlet tube closely for air bubbles. If you see this your OI system may be failing possibly due to the ground bundle. Not saying this is for sure the problem, just a possibility.

That main ground was definitely the problem. I cleaned it, filed the frame and coated it with dielectric grease, tightened it down good . No more problems. Thanks to all whom answered. :D
