390RR strange problem

Postby njbill » Mon Apr 06, 2020 5:32 am

My 2016 390 RR developed a strange problem yesterday. It starts right up and runs fine for about 10 seconds then dies like the kill switch was depressed. While it is running, the headlight is not on. I know the headlight is normally on while the engine is running.

I've sequentially unplugged each circuit off the bars (kill switch, turn signals, etc.) and it does the same thing. Do I have a bad starter relay? Thanks

Prob not the starter relay. If that was bad the starter either wouldn’t spin or spin all the time, and would be easy to notice.

I would check the stator connection and pick-up connection...both should be under the tank.

Does it happen randomly or is it always happening about 10sec after starting?

This is all it does now - starts normally (headlight off) and runs for about 10 seconds then engine stops as though kill switch was depressed. I will check the stator and pick-up connection as soon as I get a minute. I'm still working through the stay-at-home order. Thanks for the reply. I really appreciate it.

I remember seeing this 10sec prob somewhere else. Tip over sensor or something like that.

While it was happening, I took the tip-over sensor out of my friend's 390 and plugged into mine. That was not it. I would be forever grateful if you remembered where you saw another occurrence of this 10 second problem.

Thanks!

I had similar problem on my former 2016 350 RR 4T.

It was the broken fuel filter in the tank to blame. Filter was cracked, so fuel line didn't have enough pressure. Engine ran for few seconds and then just died (of course, since there was not enough fuel going to injector). It's not obvious, since fuel filter is within the tank, so it spills fuel right back in the tank and you cannot see anything abnormal.

Worth checking, at least.

I seriously doubt that it is the (notoriously bad) connector from the stator, since if it is - the bike won't start next time, due to the drained battery.
