Hi trail rider, I agree but I'm getting charge off the regulator / rectifier. I'm not ruling anything out and like a numpty I pinched one of the carb breather tubes when dropping the engine back into position. That will certainly not help as a blocked breather can also be symptomatic of what I'm seeing.

Checked the battery today after letting it stand for 24 hours. Measured 12.75 volts so is holding charge. I'll post an update in a few days time. Thanks for the tips so far

How can you rule out the carb and then later say you took apart for first time? And screw driver on the main? The main has no screw slot the pilot does. Think you are in too deep for your mechanical knowledge, and should be at a shop that can rule out voltage regulator and have fresh eyes to look over the bike.
