MY2106 430 RS stalled and won't start

Postby pscook » Mon Dec 28, 2020 8:45 pm

I was out for a pleasant ride this afternoon (first ride in 7 months since I broke my foot), and when cresting a small hill, the bike stalled and won't restart. I just got home and have not pulled anything off, that's tomorrow's task.

Conditions:
Passive reset was performed yesterday to set up for today's conditions
Cold, warming to 40F by the time it stalled
    Wet, but not muddy
Several puddle crossing, nothing deeper than the top of the engine case (not near the air box/filter)
Here is what I checked trailside:
Battery (good, cranks and cranks and cranks...)
Kill switch (cranks when out, won't crank when engaged)
Fuse (swapped spare in, still won't start)
Jiggled wires and plugs behind the number plate while cranking, no start
Unplugged and checked all plugs behind the number plate, reinstalled with confidence; no start
    Plug boot is installed
Fuel pump cycles (can smell gas when holding throttle open during cranking)
My next steps are to remove the tank and troubleshoot the coil and surrounding connections. It's getting fuel, but I'll still check the hoses and wires there. I might pull the stator cover off to see if the ignition trigger is out of place or otherwise inoperative. Is there a way to confirm spark is at TDC (or whatever the correct degree is)?

What else should I consider? Can I troubleshoot/bench check the ECU?

I figured it out: one of the fuel hose connections inside of the tank is bad. I bodged together a fix to prove the issue. Where can I get a replacement fitting? I assume that it's an assembly from Beta as it attaches to the fuel return block at the bottom of the tank (not the pump). Any ideas on how to replace?

PScook, I had the same thing happen three years ago. I fixed it the same way you did on both connections inside the tank and have had no issues since.
You could install a new fitting but I believe your safety wire fix is better. It's certainly positive.

Thanks for the feedback, Warren. I didn't even think to address the other fitting. With the tank full of gas I'm reluctant to strip it down again, but maybe the next time I run the tank dry I'll pop it off and secure the other fitting. I'm thinking the same that the fix is more robust/secure than the plastic retainer.

Great minds... :D

I'm going to climb into the tank "soon" and secure the other fitting, just because.
