22 XT overcharging?

Postby 135vtm » Sun Oct 08, 2023 9:07 am

I had a year old lithium battery go bad on my 22 XT. In replacing the battery I decided to check the charging system. After about 45 seconds of run time it ramps up to the low 15v’s at the battery & slightly higher at the display consistently with both the lithium or lead acid battery installed. Feeling this is a bit high & not wanting to shorten the life of the new battery I replaced the regulator/rectifier, the diode pack, & the capacitor/condenser one at a time which resulted in no change whatsoever.

I can’t seem to find any check info in the service manual other than a stator & pickup resistance test.

Anyone know of a supplemental service document for the charging system?

Is 15.5v at the battery common on these bikes?

I wouldn’t think the somewhat common loose “cold crimp” issue would cause an overcharge but maybe?
I haven’t torn into the harness to check the crimps yet but there’s nothing else left is there?

Any advise or shared experiences would be appreciated, love the bike & would like to get it sorted myself without resorting to leaving at the dealer.

Cheers!
