Beta Shocking me

Postby ktm526 » Wed Jun 03, 2015 3:45 am

While riding this weekend my bike started shocking me through the front brake lever. Only if the revs were up a little and it was pretty good shock. Like if my finger was on the spark plug. I did a search and found someone else had this problem but there were no replies and he never came back to say if he had figured it out. I'm stumped on it. Any ideas?

The stock kill switch is integrated in the switch cluster. On the inside of this there is no seal so it can get wet and fouled with dirt. The kill switch is part of the primary circuit in the CDI which operates at around 200V, so if things get wet you can feel a shock. Clean out and grease the switch or better yet run a normal kill switch and get rid of all the clusters if you don't need them.

I was getting shocked when getting the bike wet. I stuffed kill switch with dielectric grease and it got better, but at he end, removing the horn fixed the problem for me.

I do miss my horn though!!

I couldn't find anything wrong anywhere and could not duplicate it in my garage. I hate to lose the horn! Its made me so poplar lately :D ! The riding conditions I was in when it was shocking me were super dry and dusty so no chance water caused it. As far as the name I've been riding KTM's for the last 15 years and every forum I'm on thats my user name. Easy to remember. But I do love my Beta and look forward to 15 years on them!

Try replacing the integrated kill switch with a separate one, or just temporarily disconnect it. If that solves the problem you know there was some HV coupling in the switch block. You can trap moisture from wash water or rain in there there easy. I removed all that crap, sealed every connection, and I can blast the hose on the entire bike without issue. Clean filter and a one kick start.

One kick start? Over 1000 miles and I haven't used my kickstarter yet!

I use it for two reasons:

Harescrambles starts, and to guage the overall health of the bike in the AM by how easy it is to kickstart.
