Need Sachs Fork damping rod holding tool

Postby jump64 » Mon Nov 30, 2015 4:26 pm

What is everyone using for the damping rod holding tool? According the to Sachs Fork manual I need part number (005299000094) where can I get this tool? Or what do you recommend using?
Thanks, any links or information is appreciated.

The generic four hole Race Tech tool works fine for holding the rod in a vise during revalve work. Still, I hold the tap with a 17mm while loosening the tap nut.

After chasing my tail last week trying to do the same thing, I found that if I held the fork in a vise by the bottom yoke (carefully as I don't have a suspension vise) and fully extend the damping rod (or compression rod as I call it) by hand, exerting pressure, I spun the 17mm nut on the bottom of the compression thingy with an impact and they separated nicely.

That would be the function of a cartridge holding tool. If that's what the OP means, then yes an impact tool works fine. What I do is first drain the oil, then spin the cap back on a few turns. Lay the fork on the bench with the cap against the wall in a folded rag as a pad. Compress slightly and go at it. These forks had no loctite and were easy with my 3/8" drive gun. Compression base valve on these is 21 mm. You will find a common 13/16" six point socket with the lead taper ground off is a perfect snug fit.

Thanks for the replies and the tips, everybody on here is always so helpful. I made up a tool out of PVC that allowed me to hold the rod in place. Simple and inexpensive yet it worked great. For some reason it is not allowing me to post any photos, so I will post a couple later.
