RR250 Racing MY 2016 setup

Postby david.bergen » Thu Aug 25, 2016 8:58 am

I have a MY 2016 RR250 racing with approx 10 h run time.
Fork and shock clickers are set as the factory specs
Rider 62 kg moderate pace rider.
I have installed the fastway protection link in the lowest position ( lower by 15 mm) for compensating on the front I also raised the forks to the third line ( approx 9-10 mm)
Sag settings
Fork
Bike sag 36 mm with rider it drops to 44 mm

Shock
Bike sag 38 mm with rider it drops to 105 mm

Are these values correct for me ?
I only use less than 2/3 off the fork travel ( used a ty wrap to get the max distance)
In the rear I seem to get the correct sag setting but don't know how much off the shock travel I am using here.
Also the fastway link is stiffening up the first part off the shock travel ( said so on the instruction sheet)
Are the values correct or do I need a different spring rate ( forks, shock)
Best,
David

Despite your lowering the fork, I think the bike is too low in the rear now with the 105mm sag AND the 15mm static height loss from the link change. thats a huge overall difference from what a lot of us have found optimum for front end traction. I would run the link in std. position and forks to the 2nd line, race sag 100mm, and see what your static sag and spring preload are.

GMP,
Thank you for the info.
I am coming off the 300 XT and still getting used to the different RR250 caracter :D
The spring preload is at the moment a little less than the factory setup. ( does it help if I try to measure it ?)
Without the link installed the static sag was 35 mm. Now with the link and a litlle less preload the static sag is 38 mm.
I am considering the seat concepts lower seat as I can put the link in standard setup . Shipping the seat to Belgium is making it very expensive ( almost 400 euro including shipping, all taxes etc) I am a short rider and went with the link as I already had it.
What do you think about the fork figures ?

If the forks on the '16 250 racing and the 300 racing are the same setup, they have too heavy oil in it.
I initially rode mine with the fork clickers all the way open too bed in the forks and after that changed the oil to 5W.
Much better now.

David,

The Fastway link, while a great product, was never really engineered with the Beta in mind from an adjustment perspective. IMO,it's a KTM feature that just transfered over. The Beta is boarderline too low stock and sensitive to balance F&R. I would go back to stock position. Next remove all the preload from your spring, and take a reference measurement. Now set your race sag to 100 mm max. What is your static sag and preload?

I don't go by fork sag because the stiction makes the measurement unreliable. Go by how the bike feels and steers. Start with forks at the 2nd line. 10 hrs is a good time for a post breakin oil change and inspection, and while your in there set the preload to 0-5mm.

That will get you reasonably well balanced. A stiff fork and low rear will put you on the deck.

The fork dynamic measurement is often confusing as the only time your legs wipe fully is when they are apart on the bench, and they only fully extend when rebounding. In all likelyhood you'll see only about 11 inches of travel from fully extended on a stand.

David from your settings, I understand that you're also looking to lower your bike, yes?
If that is the case, there are other more proper ways to accomplish this.

You'll loose some suspension travell but probably you will never notice this.

I noticed the same thing on my ´16 300 Racing and I suspect the 250 is the same, factory fork oil is very heavy and I had to run the comp clickers fully open. Changing the oil to 5W is a big improvement.

Correct ,
both compression and rebound are on the lowest setting ...

I am looking in a low seat so I can put the link and fork to the standard settings
