2017 Sachs closed cartridge oil change ?

Postby 3pine » Sun Mar 19, 2017 9:55 pm

Hello, I have a 2017 300RE with Sachs Cc forks and attempting to do a proper oil change. I have been studying the PDF manual on the Beta USA sight . I also have done some research on this sight for hints and tips to do this proper. I'm real confused on the instructions for replacing the oil. I saved all the oil so I could keep track of the volume removed. I poured all the oil out of the outer tube and removed the inner cartridge and purged the oil out of it by pushing down on the damping rod . I didn't disassemble any further then reassembled with some heavier springs and poured in 350 cc of oil in the outer chamber as the manual said. I removed about the same amount of oil as near as I could tell. Then I was reading that some people have put 200 cc in the inner cartridge and purged then put 350 cc in the outer. The manual shows a complete disassembly of the fork and then only adding 350 cc of oil in the outer tube. Confused!

Re read this morning and realized my mistake of not draining inner cartridge and missed the page in manual of adding 200 ml to cartridge.

Pretty happy with stock valving. Went with Maxima 5 w . Couldn't find enough of the stock Liqui Moly .

The inner chamber needs 200cc and then a purge. Outer chamber needs 350cc. If you did not add oil to the inner chamber(cartridge) you'll have no damping.

EDIT: I see you did not empty the inner cartidge. You might still have the proper oil volume in there. It's good to change the oil on both chambers while you have the forks open though.

Just realized I missed the page of adding 200 ml in the cartridge. My bad! I wanted to avoid complete disassembly just change oil and springs. Thanks

Don't feel too bad when I changed my inner cartridge(200cc), the oil came out really clean while the outer(350cc) oil was visibly dirty and used. It's a good idea to change 'em both. That break-in factory oil was stiff as heck... I would just wait till the next oil change and do em both. YMMV...
