15' 300RR Sachs fork oil

Postby pguerci » Thu Sep 24, 2015 3:01 pm

It't time for first service on my 2015 Sachs forks (300RR) and have to get the right oil.

Which oily type are you using and and which is the behavior of the front fork you're getting?

Original bike owner's manual specs SHELL TELUS 32 (which is a 32 in ISO scale equivalent to 10W in SAE scale), however the american sachs fork service manual recommends Motul 5W, any idea why a lighter oil than the original spec? Which one works best 5W o 1SAE 0W/ISO 32?

You need to go by viscosity in centistokes @ 40 deg C comparing fork oils, forget the SAE ratings they are worthless in this case. That said, minor viscosity changes primarily affect rebound, and lower speed at that. I played with different viscosity oils in my Zokes and it made little difference. I have a set of Sachs ready for springs and oil and I'll just use KYB 01 or Amsoil Shock Therapy light. Most mfg. recommend who is a sponser. My '13 was all Panolin, now Motul, next could be anyone, its no big deal.

My only choice was Motul, so I used 5W Factory LIne. About 650ml per leg to a level of 120mm. I tried it at 130mm, but I think 120mm works better for me.
Action seems a bit plusher then with the stock oil. I didn't notice major advantages or disadvantages, but I adapt quickly to anything that works.

Well, SAE or ISO graduation is just a simple and standard way to compare a set of oil parameters in a range. Putting the question in viscosity terms, Beta house recommends a 32 mm2/s viscosity oil (TELUS 32) -assume i'ts the stock oil in the fork-, and American fork's manual recommends a 17,9 mm2/s viscosity oil (Motul 5W), this was my question ... why, how different do they feel.

For the 2012 and 2013 Sachs forks, the suggested oil was SAE 2.5 (whatever that means...).
Starting from 2014, the suggestion changed to an industry hydraulics oil Shell Tellus 32 (according to press kit), SAE 6.1 (according to the spare parts diagram) and SAE 7.5 (according to what I was told when I brought up the issue in the 2015 European launch).
Moreover few riders, trying to align with the press kit recomendation, used a 35cst SAE10 oil (one of them Leon_RR) but personally I haven't so you have to ask him for more details.
The suggestion from AB for SAE5 (whatever in this viscosity range) is not correct,

So concluding, I suggest for starters to use a SAE 7.5 oil with a real viscosity between 22 to 26 cst and if you find the forks action fast, move up to around 30 cst.

Hope this helps....

Useful explanation about SAE-ISO-AGMA viscosity grade systems, conversion chart also

I 2nd the 7.5W. I used 5w Maxima and had to reset the clickers to get it back where it was. Mine are 150mm from the top which was about 600ml. It is using all the travel with 1 50# spring and one stock 48#. I weigh 200 with no gear and do MX and enduro/scrambles.

Here, this has been floating around for awhile now and is a good reference. I have the table in pdf but apparantly I cannot attach anything to my posts anymore. Quota limit error??
