Settings or valving issue?

Tuning and maintenance of forks, shocks, etc.

I just asked Steve this same question.

I'm thinking of giving 0.46 fork and 5.6 springs a shot.

Thanks for the feedback.

You're likely best with the 0.44s - if you don't like those we'll try something different.

Here's an interesting thing about the preload. Suppose you're running a 0.50 kg/mm spring. 3mm difference in preload creates a difference of 3 kgf to begin to move the forks (2 springs x 3mm x 0.50 kg/mm). It's possible that seal friction can cause almost the same effect. I've had forks here for service that the upper leg wouldn't slide down the lower leg with the damper rod and spring removed, and when they did go it was with considerable force. Keep those seals clean and lubed, and consider SKF seals if you don't already have them fitted.

Thanks for the info, Steve.

I have the SKF HD seals installed and have been doing fork maintenance every 10 hours.

0.44 fork and 5.6 shock springs on the way from twowheels.

I hope to get these installed this week, get the rear sag set, and ride over the weekend if it's not too wet.

I'll keep an eye on the outer chamber oil color as well.

Thanks to everyone who's helped answer questions on this an other threads. Trying to learn all this.

0.44 fork and 5.6 shock spring installed(Thanks twowheels). Bike is better balanced this way and the front actually hooks up more and the bike turns better.

Observation: I'm currently running Maxima 85/150 5wt oil which is pretty thin(15.9 cSt at 40C). With the rebound adjusters all the way in, the rebound is still too fast. So, in theory one could change the rebound valving stack to slow down the rebound, or run thicker oil(20+ cSt) and change the compression stack? If this is done, can I play with the existing shims by changing the order, or do I need additional shims? I can post up the stacks next time I'm in there.

Do you remember the race sag you had in the front with the .42 springs and what is it now with .44?
