Shock spring preload adjustment

Postby allkidd » Thu Jul 19, 2018 3:40 pm

I've got a 2018 500 RRS. The sag is way off so I went to adjust the spring preload and figured it wouldn't be any big deal. The problem is that I can't get the Beta tool on the ring. Do I have to take the shock out to make every adjustment? Is there a better tool than the tool that came with the bike tool kit? I've got a tool that I used with a KTM but I can't even begin to get it in.

Long punch and a hammer is what I use.

Use a large screw driver and lever off the frame against a rag with the bike on a stand rear wheel off the ground. This won't damage the rings at all its quick and easy. Better still if you have the correct spring with correct preload you can just turn the spring.

I'd use a brass punch. It'll keep you from indenting the snug ring. The brass will flatten first (which is the intent). A screw driver will fork, but if a little force is needed, you'll ding-up the ring (if you care).

Put the bike on a stand, loosen the lock ring then turn the spring by hand (you may need a glove for grip). Easy and this way you don't make a mess of your locking collars.
