Factory/Racing... Or standard suspension

Postby Jezza69 » Sun Jul 07, 2019 2:53 am

In the market for a 250/300rr.
Is the factory suspension worth the extra... Do they still have problems with the anodising coming off.... I have cc fork currently on my ktm 150. That have been revalved lovely but all I've hear from Beta cc forks are they are stiff and harsh.
I know Steve plain can do a good valving job. But is it worth the extra... Or should I just go with standard and maybe put some Dal soggio spheres in the OC forks.
Also what are the shocks like.
Thanks in advance

The standard suspension has improved over the last few years. I had one of the 1st 300RRs and the suspension was the worst I've ever had. However, I rode a 200RR earlier this week and I was very impressed. The suspension was very soft but I am too heavy for the standard springs and it performed very well despite that.

I reckon the best advice would be to buy as recent a bike as you can, if you are going for 2nd hand. Steve Plain has loads of experience and knows what he's doing. I'm sure he can sort something for you.

Compared to the cost of a new KTM TPI, you could spend a lot of money on suspension for a Beta. KTM suspension is not as good as it was a few years ago imho.

I was going to suggest Acklams Beta near Harrogate but that's quite a trek for you. Very good dealer though with lots of Beta experience and run by riders too.

He's a bit of a marmite character. Beware his used bikes, they have often been thrashed by his supported riders and are a bit tatty up close.
