Stripped lower shock bolt! 70nm my ass..

Postby Mslow » Thu Dec 25, 2014 10:26 am

Breaking my 300rr down to clean and grease everything, when I go to reinstall the rear shock to the linkage the bolt spun out the threads.
The spec sheet someone posted here said 70nm for the lower bolt and it never even got there.
Anyone have an idea on how to fix this so I can ride Saturday? It's supposed to be mid fifties and sunny, go figure.

looks like helicoil time. I've had to install more 6mm helicoils in this beta than all the bikes I've owned put together. from both tank mounting bolts to even the side panel bolts. the shock bolt is a new one though

That's a bummer.
I'll agree a helicoil is going to be the quickest way to fix it. Later you may want to look into getting a threaded insert made that will be self held in the shock clevis.

What size are the threads on that bolt? You didn't mistakenly have your torque wrench set to 70 ft lbs did you? 70 nm is equal to 51 ft lbs and that still sounds on the high side. I think KTM shock bolts are 10mm and go to 36 ft lbs.

Trash that Beta torque table ASAP! Use industry standards or known good values from another bike with the same size fasteners. That bolt should be no more than half that value, and 20-30% less when anti seized. Can you get a slightly longer bolt and a low profile nut to fit? Not sure would have to look at mine.

Yeah, this made me feel like I made a total rookie mistake, but no such luck. It was set at 68nm.
I did have a feeling that was high for a steel bolt into soft aluminum, now I know.

So I'm hoping Fastenal is open today, they have the threaded insert in an M10-1.25 in stock right by me. Otherwise I may have to just wait and order it, but I really want to ride tomorrow.

I did check the clearance and there's little to no clearance with the fastway guard.

Glenn, yeah I'm going by feel from now on, along with some anti-seize.

Well, I ended up grinding down the thicker side of the clevis that was threaded and used a low profile nut and blue loctite.
Bike is back together and ready to ride tomorrow.

Mine did the same thing. I thought my torque wrench was off! Mine happened the morning of the VA national enduro and I was freaking out......Enduro Engineering gave me a slightly longer bolt from their bar riser kit. Worked perfect. After that I carefully installed with locktite at half the spec like Glenn said.

I had older GGs with the same type of tapped alloy clevis on the shocks. I saw that 70Nm spec and immediately lost confidence in the entire table. Well, maybe it was the 120Nm rear axel spec with the aluminum nut! I used to think the GG table was bad but this one takes the cake. Come on guys get this thing off your website! That bolt should be 25Nm with anti seized threads. Top bolt in the steel nut 40Nm. You don't need loctite on these bolts, especially in alloy threads.
