Is this gap normal

Do all betas have this much gap between the brake piston and the pad. I pushed the piston in to illustrate the gap size. Brakes work fine but 1/3rd of the piston comes out to engage.

Nope. A few things look out of sorts there. Something looks frozen-up. That caliper should slide freely...

The gap just is what it is. Everything is pretty well fixed in size and geometry, and position of the caliper is fixed by rotor location. The only two variables than can increase the gap are 1) pad thickness, and 2) rotor thickness, both which get smaller with wear.

I agree being this is my only beta i have nothing to compare. My ktm has little to no gap when pads and rotors are in good condition. The beta has a large gap when all parts are almost new.

My perfectly working 2018 300rr is the same. You're good.

When replacing the pads with new beta pads you will be shocked at how thick they are new. Way thicker than any of my previous bikes. You will need the room

That's a fairly typical gap, but as was mentioned you might want to get after those pins with some emory and lubrication, or spring for stainless steel pins.
