Weight saving?

Postby Seattle300rr » Tue Nov 27, 2018 8:40 am

After adding a 3g tank and some crash protection I got to wondering if I could shave some weight and get the bike close to stock weight while keeping the 3g tank and crash protection.

Anyone have any worth while weight saving ideas? 2019 390rr and 300rr

Best way to reduce weight on those bikes is get rid of your gut (if it pertains to you) & stop eating so many christmas cookies. Seriously, I've seen "large" guys gloat about shedding 2 lbs from their bike when they are by far the big load.

Haha, I know what you mean. I am 175lbs 5'-9'...close to optimum weight. I'm working on losing a few lbs of my body as well. working out 3x a week and riding a minimum of once a week.

There was a thread on TT where a guy went to extreme weight savings mode. Depending what year you bike is. Remove the kickstarter and gears. Install the race loom and remove all the lights and wiring. Of course Li Ion battery. Tubliss instead of ex heavy duty tubes.

For my use- I won’t buy a dirt bike without a kicker. It doens’t have to be a great kicker, but I require one. I’ve had too many friends have their battery die, or starter die or starter just plain not work well (mostly older KTM).
For a track bike? yeah- e-start only makes a lot of sense.

I’m speculating you could loose more weight taking all the e-start stuff off, remove the battery (perhaps a capacitor instead). But I like e-starts. My Beta 4T evo (Trials) starts incredibly easily. Just push the kicker through to start it. But I would still like an e-start for it. (But of course I problay wouldn’t like the weight).

I tried a Shorai Li battery on my old KTM- it didn’t work very well when it was cold. But if you still had a kick start and weight was really important- then changing to one of the Li batts makes a lot of sense. Especially since it is pretty high up on the bike.
I suppose you could drop a bundle on fancy wheels/hubs. But I’m not really use how much that would loose.
Tyres/tubes/Tubliss/Moose -that can be a huge amount of weight difference. Of course, since the tyre is the only thing touching the ground (hopefully) they are also perhaps the single most important thing on the bike.

In the Trials world some bike have titanium frames/swing arms avliable. $$$$$$ I don’t know of any for enduro bikes.

(One of my OSSAs weighs 142lbs- THAT is light. Especially with a bunch of power that comes on right now).

I’m afraid I’m not much help.

Any idea what the thread was called or how old it is? Might look it up. The battery is on my short list and I already run TUbliss

Don't get hung up on weight
Just get fitter and stronger and it won't matter 8-) 8-)
