Gearing 12-49 vs 13-52

Postby Toshy1 » Fri Nov 29, 2019 9:40 am

Just looking to see if there is any problems with running a 12t up front??
I'm looking to lower the gearing on my 300rr. The stock 13-49 is a little tall for my riding
It looks like either if these combos give the same ratio the 52 would give better chain life and clearance.
Does the 12t up front rub on the chain slide excessively??

A smaller front sprocket will put more pressure on the chain as it forces it to bend more and both will wear faster.

If it were me, I'd go for a larger rear sprocket but wait until the chain is due for change as you may need a couple of extra links to allow you to keep the wheel at the same position. Moving the wheel right up will shorten the wheelbase and make the bike handling more twitchy.

I agree with Hubert. Run the biggest front sprocket you can. Better chain angle relative to the swingarm and less wear on the countershaft sprocket are two good reasons why.

Pulling the axle forward shortens the wheelbase and changes the weight distribution somewhat, and also makes the rear suspension stiffer.

I personally like the 13-51 ratio = 3.92
the 13-52 = 4.0 and 12-49 = 4.08 so if you want comparable gearing to the 13-52 you need 12-48 =4.0 vs 12-49

I agree with the larger countershaft sprocket.

Does anyone know if Beta uses the same sprocket as another brand? Like KTM or Honda etc.? :?:

Front Sprocket from KTM is the same, supposedly the Honda rear is close - but I wouldn't risk it at the price of a broken hub. Besides the rear sprocket is available from multiple sources if you shop.
