New Beta Rider- 430 or 480 Race Edition Feedback

Postby Tire2Trail » Sun May 30, 2021 7:29 am

Just recently bought a 2020 390 RR Race Edition and absolutely love it! Have owned it for about a month and I never ride my other bikes. I do sometimes wish it had just a little more power coming out of aggressive turns and on the dirt roads..it runs up to 50-60 mph comfortably, but I wouldn't want to push it much above that. I don't want to change the gearing bc it's been excellent in the the slow and technical stuff. I still have a 2021 KTM 300 XC and a 2021 KTM 500 EXC-F (Graves pipe and Athena GET ECU) in the garage, but def wanting to go all BETA. The Beta just seems to fit me....love the ergo's, love the look, love the smooth power, love the suspension right off the showroom floor and love the sound.

I'm 6', 210 pounds, low B/high C rider. Consistently ride at the same places which include rocky, hilly single track, some open dirt roads, some flowy, faster single track and a relatively easy MX practice track. Also want to do some shorter dual sport rides and maybe even an overnighter with a mix of highway and dirt roads...not too many highway miles though (less than 60 miles a clip). Really want to get down to 2 bikes, but also wondering if the 430 could do it all! I have my eyes (and a deposit) on both a 2021 Beta 430 Race Edition and a 2021 Beta 480 Race Edition. I can plate the Race Editions in my home state of CT. Would like to have two bikes that between them both could do it all....thinking a 390/480 combo might be amazing, but wondering if the 430 could possibly do it all! Any input would be appreciated.

I haven't ridden the 2020 / 2021 430 and 480, but I did ride the 2019 Race Editions. At that time, the 430 Race was my favorite Beta. Crazy fast, but still had a touch more inclination to turn. BUT with that said, the racers seem to prefer the new 480 over the 430. I believe Steve Holcomb on his IG somewhere said the new 480 is even more nimble than his older 430, and with more power.

A second point is, you already have a smaller bore 4 stroke. Why not go big with this one?

Greetings all. I just joined. I have a 2022 Beta 430RR Race Edition on order. Hard a hard time getting one, but they say it is supposed to be here end of February. I don't really believe that, just hope it gets here for summer with all these "covid" delays.
My dealer has had a 480 on order since August and it still hasn't shown up.

I've been riding since I was a kid and have raced some AMA District 14 enduro's between 1995 and 2003 on Honda CR250's, a CR500 with the CRE kit and a KTM300 EXC.

I quit riding in 2003 and have only been riding my atv's and my two vintage bikes, a 77 Yamaha IT175 and a 77 Honda Elsinore 175.

I like two strokes, but looking forward to trying a big four stroke. Will be riding with my cousin who has a CRF450.

Looking forward to seeing everyone's Beta's.

Here's my old pumpkin.

I’m new to Beta 4T and the site too—just bought a ‘21 390 RE trade-in before Christmas, with 10 miles on it. I’ve been on a KTM 500EXC for all purpose Offroad and occasional DS the past 5 years, and got a nimble ‘14 Husq 300TE two weeks before Covid lockdown (thank God) for the tight and tech single track—too worn out chasing my buddies on 300s while trying to man-handle the 500.

I’d been hearing that the 390 was the gruntiest and most forgiving of the 4Ts in the tight stuff. Plus easy to plate and add lights for short duty on the tarmac once in awhile, had the bonus KYBs and it’s so damn pretty. Three rides on it so far, about 100mi in the woods and desert, still fiddling with the suspension, but really like it so far! The super smooth power, handling and suspension give instant confidence. And other Beta guys are friendly and eager to chat—like the good old days when I was an outlier on a white KTM 300 in the early ‘90s, a bit of a brotherhood. Welcome! :D
