IMS 3.2 or Clarke tank.

Postby Dirtnap » Mon Oct 17, 2016 9:29 pm

Hello, i just recently picked up a 13" 400 RS. My brother in law has the 14" 520 and he said his range is only about 70-75 miles on his stock tank. we typically ride long Desert rides here in So Cal and Baja in which we do about 100-120 range average. My question is how do you like your IMS or Clarke tanks and what kind of range are you getting.? I am leaning toward the IMS 3.1 because of the fit and finish (i had one on another bike). I also recently heard IMS is making a 3.9 Tank supposedly do out in November. Also would you or did you run the Beta petcock or that thing IMS calls a petcock? Thanks for any help/replies in advance.

28 views and no replies? Ok maybe i can help some of you out. I contacted IMS regarding they're tanks and a new larger tank is made but only available through Beta USA. Here was IMS response.

We actually did develop a 4.5 gallon tank that would work for your bike, but unfortunately those are still in production and have not been sent out to Beta USA. You’ll need to be in contact with them about this particular tank or any other IMS tank that you would like. We do not sell these tanks to any other customers besides Beta USA, so you would need to go through them if you’re looking to purchase one. Let me know if you have any questions or if there’s anything else that I can help you with.

Thank you,
Daniel Carlos

I have the 3.2 gallon IMS on my '14 498RR. In Baja and most dual sport rides I get 120-140 miles out of a tank (on reserve), which is a perfect distance for those trips. The quality is excellent, fit and finish is acceptable. I had to clean up the wiring to my cooling fan to clear the larger tank, but otherwise I could barely tell it's any wider.

Thanks mtnmanseth! appreciate the feedback. What petcock did you use?. I did not like the IMS one on my other bike.

I have an IMS on my 300RR and the fit sucks. It is difficult to mount and take off. Tank interferes with the top triples so you have to reduce your turning radius by a fair amount. Stock Beta petcock does fit. Gives good range. I hope Acerbis will come out with a proper tank sometime. I have always preferred the Acerbis over any of the other makes. I have gone back to the stock tank and just carry extra fuel if needed.

Thanks for the replies everyone, Hard to believe the fit and finish on these tanks are so bad considering they have bikes to mach them up and IMS made them directly for Beta. I do see more people having problems with the 300's fit than the rest of the bikes. I might just end up buying a few different ones to see what i like the best but appreciate the input.

I have the IMS 3.2 tank, no problems with the fit and I did have to reduce the turning radius somewhat; however, it's not enough to bother me. I did away with the right side petcock, the little amount that is left there is just another reserve for me. I also have had my tank off a couple of times and found it to be easy once I use a certain sequence to re-install it. I've had both Clarke and IMS on my YZ two strokes and actually preferred the Clarke whereas most liked the IMS - when it came to the Beta the IMS was the only one available. I will say that IMS stepped right up when I had a leak at one of the shroud bolts and sent a new one without even seeing the old one.

I bought a Clarke tank for my old yz and it was a great tank. No fit issues and great quality.
